Retained core: a far-side/subsurface lunar facility can serve as a staging environment for quarantine, medical observation, acclimation, logistics and controlled Earthward migration. Subsurface placement offers radiation shielding and concealment benefits.
The older claim that the base was built 20,000 years ago and slept undetected for twenty millennia is superseded. Claims of absolute zero emissions, perfect thermal masking, inability of Earth to detect a deep base, or universal invisibility to modern lunar observation are also too categorical.
The facility’s actual construction date, depth, power system and degree of modern detectability remain open.
Open questions
- When was the current lunar facility constructed?
- Was it built new during the Returning or does it reuse older infrastructure?
- What observations could realistically expose it?
