Rowan’s narrative voice should distinguish her from the general DOG narrative voice. Under fear or acute threat, her internal thought can become short and clipped. This is a stress response, not evidence of unconscious Gaian breath culture.
Old “mythic perception” is revised. Rowan is observant and associative rather than an oracle who automatically perceives symbolic truth. She notices patterns, assigns meaning, and can be wrong.
Curiosity is a particularly useful element of her emotional register because it connects to her developing capacity for delay: she can ask one more question rather than immediately deciding what something means.
POV principle: Rowan notices before she concludes. Under threat, her thinking contracts. Given room, curiosity reopens it.
This creates a useful contrast with Danu: Danu experiences uncertainty and closes interpretation; Rowan experiences uncertainty and can learn to leave interpretation open. This is a developed skill, not innate moral superiority.
Open questions
- How does Rowan’s sentence rhythm change across the novel as her capacity for delay develops?
- Which recurring sensory details characterize her attention without turning them into prophetic symbols?
