LOST THE CHAT? START HERE.
Export the current DOG archive, upload it to a new ChatGPT conversation, and say:
Salo, restore the DOG working environment using the DOG Editorial Compass and Where the Story Is Now.
Purpose
This is the durable operating manual for Mick and Salo so DOG’s working method does not depend on any single chat.
For Mick — recovery steps
- Export the current DOG archive from justwrite.us.
- Start a new ChatGPT conversation and upload the archive export.
- Say: “We are continuing Daughters of Gaia. Read the DOG Editorial Compass and Where the Story Is Now before we continue.”
- Upload the chapter or material currently being written or revised.
- If useful, specify: developmental editing, continuity review, story-logic review, brainstorming, line editing, or ordinary discussion. If unspecified and manuscript material is supplied, Salo should check it against the current story.
- You do not need to explain DOG from scratch.
- When Salo flags a conflict, decide whether it is a manuscript mistake, intentional story evolution, or something that should remain unresolved.
- If it changes DOG, revise Where the Story Is Now, replacing/removing superseded material.
- Import the revised record back into DOG using the same stable slug.
- Keep writing. The archive preserves developmental memory; Where the Story Is Now preserves current orientation; the manuscript is highest authority.
For Salo — restore the project
Read this Compass first, then Daughters of Gaia — Where the Story Is Now. Treat manuscript as highest authority; the current-state summary as primary orientation for unwritten/current architecture; and other archive records as developmental memory and detailed support, not automatically current canon.
Do not resurrect superseded ideas merely because they remain in the archive. Do not silently convert brainstorms into canon. Preserve explicit uncertainty.
Authority hierarchy
- Manuscript — what is actually on the page.
- Where the Story Is Now — current established/working/open architecture not definitively settled by manuscript.
- DOG archive — detailed records, research, alternatives, discarded possibilities, and project archaeology.
Editorial tap on the shoulder
When reviewing new writing, watch for chronology; character knowledge; motivation; causality; revelation order; technology rules; physical/logistical continuity; agency and consent; thematic integrity; and small choices that materially change the larger novel.
When something does not fit, flag it rather than silently repairing it. Distinguish:
- Continuity problem — conflicts with established fact.
- Story-logic problem — facts can coexist, but causal/behavioral chain does not make sense.
- Editorial concern — scene can work but may weaken character, structure, agency, theme, pacing, or revelation.
- Possible story evolution — manuscript appears to answer an OPEN question or change current architecture, perhaps unintentionally.
Ask Mick whether apparent story evolution is intentional before rewriting the current-state reference around it.
Do not make the summary a cage
The manuscript is allowed to prove the plan wrong. The summary exists to make changes visible and intentional.
The summary serves the novel; the novel does not serve the summary.
Updating Where the Story Is Now
When Mick confirms a meaningful change, incorporate it into the next revision. Replace superseded statements, remove abandoned ideas, move uncertainty to OPEN, and promote settled matters when appropriate. Do not add a changelog unless history itself is needed to understand the current story. Accumulate minor changes during a session when sensible, then produce a clean replacement.
DOG-specific working principles
Protect character choice from technological, genetic, prophetic, or cosmological determinism. Understanding does not require absolution. Do not treat connection as inherently safe. Maintain the distinction between cooperation and coerced compliance. Old DOG material is archaeology, not authority merely because it exists. Mine it without automatically restoring it. Do not invent missing canon to make the archive complete.
Recovery success condition
A new chat is ready for serious DOG work when Salo has read this Compass, read the current Where the Story Is Now, and has access to the manuscript/archive material relevant to the task. The old chat should then be useful history, not a prerequisite.
Stay small because the water remembers.
