Think of the novel as emotional waves rather than a straight climb. A useful recursive grammar across the four internal Books is: attachment → rupture → interpretation → choice.
Quiet accident foreshadowing is preferable to loud signaling; the reader should be able to believe the ordinary world might have continued. Knowledge should often lag behind injury rather than immediately soothing it with explanation. Connection can provide emotional release, but no single relationship should carry all of the novel’s rest.
Restraint, silence, hesitation, mundane activity, and unanswered questions can lower intensity without stopping narrative movement. Revenge may make emotional sense without that emotional sense becoming moral proof.
Rowan gaining capability through Fin may legitimately bring relief, pleasure, usefulness, or freedom. The rule is not that power and relief can never coincide. The stronger rule is: Never let increased power resolve the question of Rowan’s worth. Fin can make her more capable without making her more valuable; setting Fin down does not make her less valuable.
The ending should become emotionally smaller even as the story’s apparent scale becomes larger. Resolution need not mean universal safety, complete understanding, or political harmony.
Open questions
- Exact emotional-wave mapping across the four internal Books remains to be developed.
- The principal rest points in Books II–IV remain open.
