Older S&T proposed pheomelanin, carotenoids and iron-melanin complexes contributing to orange/ochre mottling, with possible UV/oxidative protective function and stress-linked visibility. Tradeoffs proposed included heat load, fatigue, tingling or itch.
The visual phenomenon is established in the storyworld, but the exact biochemistry and evolutionary/adaptive function are not locked. Do not automatically connect mottling to surviving Gaerath moss or to engineered genetics without reconciliation.
Open questions
- Is mottling ancestral Gaian biology, a later Gaerath adaptation, or both?
- What physiological mechanism makes mottling flare under stress?
