Rowan’s right glove is caught by the flighting of a running grain auger. Her arm is pulled into the machinery, producing catastrophic crush, degloving, skeletal, soft-tissue, and vascular injury. The limb cannot be salvaged.

Surgery results in a high right transhumeral amputation: the arm is removed above the elbow and relatively near the shoulder, while the shoulder joint and usable shoulder musculature are preserved. This anatomy later constrains and enables Rowan’s integration with Fin.

Immediate survival requires rapid hemorrhage control and emergency transport. Exact improvised rescue techniques, vital signs, medication doses, and week-by-week rehabilitation details from early development logs are writing reference rather than canon.

Recovery may include phantom sensations or pain, preservation of shoulder range of motion, occupational adaptation to one-handed activities, and conventional prosthetic evaluation before Fin changes the trajectory. Rowan’s important psychological consequence is not a generic amputee-adjustment arc: the accident disrupts her trust in her own body.

Open questions

  • Who performs the decisive immediate hemorrhage control?
  • What conventional prosthetic or rehabilitation experience does Rowan have before Fin?
  • How much recovery time passes before Fin enters her life?
