Tadhg is a Mojave-raised Ma’at operative defined by quiet capability, restraint and reliable presence rather than saviorhood.

Brauna

Brauna is Rowan’s Boerboel-like android guardian, initially experienced simply as her dog; the artificial revelation raises questions of personhood and loyalty.

Dr. Jean Munro

Munro is the scientist who keeps looking after others decide they know what an object is for; her intellectual movement parallels Earth’s movement from threat/utility toward culture and relationship.

Barbara begins as a bully in Rowan’s ordinary life and later, after addiction/collapse/recovery, becomes a student in Munro’s class and part of the novel’s final demonstration that people are not reducible to their worst interpretation.

Gaerath and Velora

Gaerath is Mars, the Gaian homeworld; Velora is Earth. ‘Gaia’ is an Earth-side distortion/descendant of ancient Gaian language, not the native modern name for Mars.
