The shared condition is: Being forsaken — and what one does next.

The story does not argue that abandonment automatically produces virtue. Characters face analogous conditions with different power, knowledge and consequences. Their responses distinguish bridge-building from weaponization.

Rowan/Kaia is injured, othered, lied to and used; she is misread as vessel, weapon and prophecy, but is a person capable of refusal. Her resolution is to set power aside rather than seize it. Her question is whether worth comes from power or integrity.

Danu loses her mother and experiences Heka’s absence as abandonment. She turns control into safety and constructs a ruler/savior identity around that wound. Her resolution is collapse of the controlling story, not absolution. Her question is whether domination can heal abandonment or only deepen it.

Barbara’s older thematic architecture presents emotional abandonment and privilege, followed by cruelty, collapse and the possibility of humility and quiet repair. Her question is whether redemption can be real without being claimed or publicly credited.

The Artifact and Gaerath participate in the same architecture without being characters in the ordinary sense: the broken toy retains meaning without utility or dominance; Gaerath survives catastrophe through collective adaptation rather than proving value through conquest.

North-star question: If I am not chosen, central or powerful, do I still matter?

Related formulation: what one does with abandonment determines whether one becomes a bridge or a weapon.

Open questions

  • Which additional characters should be explicitly mapped onto the forsakenness-response architecture?
  • How much of this architecture should remain authorial rather than appear in dialogue?
