The strongest psychological use of Maerlin is not simply rivalry. Because Maerlin is Danu-derived, she can embody Danu’s fear that weakness makes a person replaceable.
From Danu’s perspective, Heka’s work on Maerlin may confirm an old conclusion: when the original is wounded, inconvenient, or insufficient, the world makes another. This makes Anne simultaneously kin, mirror, insult, and evidence.
Danu’s response need not be simple hatred. She may be unable to love Maerlin freely because Maerlin activates the replacement wound, yet unable to regard her as wholly other because she is biologically and symbolically connected to Danu.
Anne’s eventual care for Rowan/Kaia can sharpen this further. The ‘replacement’ becomes capable of the ordinary maternal presence Danu lost and could not secure through control.
Exact causality remains dependent on the still-working technical origin of Maerlin and Kaia.
Open questions
- Did Danu authorize Maerlin's creation, oppose it, or discover Heka's project after it began?
- Does Danu regard Maerlin primarily as sister, clone, vessel, daughter, property, or an unstable mixture of these?
- Is Danu directly responsible for Anne's death?
