Kraethe’s manipulation works best if it is not obvious domination. He recognizes Danu’s grief, isolation, brilliance, anger at Heka, and hunger for certainty. He offers a coherent explanation: compassion exposes weakness, hesitation permits catastrophe, and the responsible ruler acts before others can injure what must be protected.
Danu can believe she is using Kraethe even while depending on him emotionally. His function is confirmation. He makes her interpretation of the world feel intelligent rather than frightened.
Small behavioral tells are stronger than declarations: after Danu makes a decision she may look to Kraethe; his approval can settle her; she may reject his explicit advice while later reproducing its premise as her own.
This dynamic preserves Danu’s responsibility. Kraethe cultivates the wound; he does not implant it, mind-control her, or make her choices for her.
